After eating a delicious dinner at the Farmhouse, I headed to this super cute coffee shop where I spent a few hours getting work done. The girl behind the counter was super friendly and gave some wonderful suggestions when I saw the beautiful display of chocolates staring me in the face. I certainly hadn't come in for chocolate but when chocolates look the way those chocolates looked...you can't say no! I also ordered a chai tea and it tasted great. Was able to find table right away and get to work! The wifi was good and overall, it was a great spot to bust out some work for a few hours.

Try the mocha...they use local chocolate and it's very yummy. A great vibe inside with rather loud music that adds to atmosphere even if you're working, it's still a great place. There is also a nice patio.

We stumbled upon The Roasterie at the most perfect time. We needed some caffeine to combat the food coma we were beginning to feel after a barbecue lunch, chocolates, and frozen custard. As if a mirage, The Roasterie was there. The Americano was on point, and the latte satisfied my friend. They also offer some Christopher Elbow products, so we naturally got some more of the turtles (it is not a proper vacation until we gorged ourselves on the local goodies). The service was great and the space was cozy. Next time I find myself in KC, I would not mind going back to The Roasterie.

The rapid rise of The Roasterie coffee in Kansas City over the past decade has been impressive and well deserved. The have delicious coffee, a great atmosphere and are dedicated to the city. For this specific cafe in Brookside, it's always been a good enough spot to get some work done with lots of electrical outlets and various seating inside and out, but it lacks in the 'cozy factor' that a lot of coffee shops have. My only slight qualm with The Roasterie in general is that from the outside looking in, it appears their success has gone to their head a bit. Cue an old man rant, but I remember just a couple years ago when the coffee would always be around $1.50, and now it's nearly doubled and is priced closer to a latte. They've also redone the space, and while it looks good enough, it seems to be following the trends by adding a reclaimed wood backdrop. This is how all the coffee shops look right now, and while it's cool, you'd like to see a bit more individuality with them. But despite the too-cool-for-school feel that is creeping in, it's still a solid place and the coffee really is pretty good. You can't beat the location either as it's nestled right off of the trolley track trail in the heart of Brookside.

Not a fan of the to-go cup and the odd smell permeating off of it. I didn't know this is how my pour over coffee, using the clever dripper, was served. If I known I would have ordered a regular drip; which seems to come in a mug. I have been to other coffee shops and had the pour over in a mug. Once I was passed the smell of the cup the actual coffee itself was really good and strong. For me, a great after dinner treat. The cafe has plenty of Christopher Elbow chocolate choices, baked goods and Roasterie items. There was plenty of high top seating. I appreciate the hours, closing at 10 or 11pm, whereas other places close super early. Because of that, I will go back and ask what coffee I need to order to get a mug.

Love coming here to catch up with old friends over coffee, or coming to read the paper with a good cup of coffee. Their coffee is of such high quiet you don't need sugar or cream. Danny o'neill is a phenomenal guy and knows his coffee. The renovation made the place much more functional and more appealing. Love it

Ya know, I've always been a fan of Roasterie coffee, but the setup of the cafe was a bit weird. I have been here a few times, but decided to eat breakfast there this morning since they offer quiche, burritos, etc. Here comes the problem. They serve the food to you cold. Then, you have to stand in line to heat up your $4 quiche in their one and only tiny microwave. Not exactly the experience I am looking for when I order food.

I've been a customer of the Roasterie since I was in high school! I've seen it evolve and grow and I am still very proud to now be living in San Diego and come back to THIS coffee shop every time I return home :) Can't beat the quality, the atmosphere, or the shear kindness you can find here!

Great coffee that is still served to go. They serve coffee and know how to do it well. But it does not have the attention to each individual cup that other shops in the city have. They give you a cup in a to-go mug and it comes made in a industrial drip maker. Still the coffee is better than Starbucks and more time-friendly than some of the other shops around town. They have a cool story about the beans being roasted nearby and maybe my opinion will change after I go tour their roasting location. For now, it remains a 4*. There are other shops (Oddly Correct) that price the coffee the same and serve/make it much better. Free wifi, lots of seating, indoor and outdoor, very friendly.

Great little gem in Brookside- coffee selection and preparing options are easy to see and order- fast service - varied clientele always makes this eclectic venue a surprise in what you'll see - love the patio for am coffee and a paper

Dear Roasterie - We've been in each others lives for over five years now. We've shared so many memories. You've been there for me through awkward dates, important meetings, and you've respected the times that I needed to just be alone and get some work done. I get that all relationships have their ups and downs, which is why it's so hard for me to say this. But you've been slipping, hard, and everybody is noticing. First it was your dishes. The first time you sent me out a muffin on a chipped plate, I assumed it was a simple mistake, easy to overlook. But it happened more and more. And when I look at your stacks of dishes, I see that in fact more are chipped than aren't. It's like you don't even take pride in your appearance any more. I'll love you regardless of how you look, but I want you to care enough to try. But try as I might, I can't overlook everything and we need to talk about your staff. I can't help but notice that the quality of customer service has gone downhill. Maybe it's just my pet peeve, but when I come to your business with the plan to spend some time working in your cafe and they give me my coffee in a to-go cup, I feel unwelcome. Sure, they'll pour my coffee into a mug when I ask, but that's awkward and by then the damage is done. I want our relationship to continue, I really do. But for that to happen, you can't just kick back and relax, resting on the reputation you earned years ago. There are newer, prettier coffee shops opening all throughout the city, all fighting for my affection. Don't make it so easy for me to start looking around for other options.

Offerring experimental drinks like Chider (chai spiced cider) and painfully-long coffee pours as well as fast and short espresso options, it's a coffee house for the road warrior who lives in coffee houses and wants to be surprised once in a while, but also get their standard order done to perfection.

They must be shut down immediately for health reasons I was there this Sunday and had some of their Caesar salad for lunch and seven hours later I had severe vomiting and diarrhea because of that . My dinner was from a trusted place as Panera bread and didn't have anything else really that day. So it was their nasty unwashed piece of shit unhealthy salad. I was even close to going to hospital . Shut it down or avoid serving anything except your damn coffee

I went here twice during the week my family was here visiting. They stayed at a B&B in the area and this was the closest coffee shop. The first day I got a latte and quiche. They give you the food cold and you have to microwave it yourself...kind of weird. It was pretty good. I got a latte again the second day. The lattes were yummy and made quickly. I thought the staff were nice. It seems a good place to study as well, plenty of seating. They also have a frequent buyers card...spend a certain amount and get a free drink! I will definitely be back.

I visited the Roasterie Saturday afternoon to caffeinate myself and relax. I brought my book and was able to snag one of the comfy chairs. I ordered a cafe au lait and it seemed very strong, but I needed the jolt so it was appreciated. There were so many yummy treats in the display case, but I resisted as I was running the Plaza 10K the next morning and determined to be healthy. The Macarons looked divine though! Very pleasant way to spend an hour of my Saturday afternoon!

My husband and I stumbled upon here for a postprandial cup of coffee after dinner the other day. We buy Roasterie coffee beans at the grocery store, so were interested in what the Roasterie Cafe could be like. First impression was good--the airplane theme was seen throughout the cafe with their posters and propeller-like ceiling fans. And we were tempted by the pastry case filled with local items such as Andre's chocolates and Smallcakes cupcakes and Roasterie products. Our drinks weren't bad--he enjoyed his cappuccino while macademia nut and white chocolate mocha (it was a specialty drink with a name I forget) was more macademia nutty than white chocolatey but was smooth and aromatic. We also enjoyed some Andre's truffles. A few days later, I was around and got a vanilla cooler. It was a lot of what I don't like in blended drinks--too sweet, not enough coffee, and too icy rather than rich and creamy. However, the major reason for bumps in stars is the service. Are the baristas taught to not smile? Am I inconveniencing them for making a drink that is on their menu? I don't know what it was, but I felt awkward standing there waiting for my drinks both times. The crowd is also a little too territorial for my tastes, too--you could tell these were regulars and they were *not* happy to have some newbie come in and invade their space. We'll continue to buy Roasterie coffee beans at the grocery store and maybe even drop by for a drink if we're in the neighborhood. But I'll probably frequent some other coffee joints in town where I feel a little more welcome.

Definitely a great place to get your coffee if you are a fan of freshly roasted coffee. On the day I came, they had Costa Rica and Java origins available. Being a fan of south American coffee, I quickly ordered the Costa Rican and it sure brought joy into my morning! The coffee was bold and aromatic, but not too acidic. Can't wait to go back when I am in the area...

I'm not a huge coffee person (so why am I writing this review, you ask? Because there are some people like me! They exist! Just not in grad school.) I got the spearmint lavender tea, which was wonderful. A good balance of flavors without being too sweet. They had a pretty good selection of pastries, too, which I am sometimes willing to splurge on. I look for coffee shops like this to study at - helps break up the work week. This has a lot of comfortable tables that aren't all crammed together like some other coffee shops. They have a small side patio also but it was snowed in when I visited. When I went, neither the other patrons nor the music were too loud, just ambient background noise. This is definitely a great place to have a cup of coffee and chat with a friend, read, or study. Since they also have such fast service, I can also definitely see running in for a quick cup (their small parking lot was full, but Brookside always has plenty of street parking during the day). Even though I can't speak to the quality of their actual coffee, I recommend!

My family and I were visiting Lawrence at Christmas time and decided to go on a Roasterie tour while we were in the area. John was our tour guide and he was really funny and knew everything about coffee. He was awesomely awkward and made the tour very enjoyable. The coffee was delicious and make sure you volunteer during the tour so you can get a few extra sips of coffee and a cool Roasterie pin!

I like the Roasterie's branding and can appreciate local coffee expertise. I'm not a connoisseur though, and I just want a sweet drink and a pleasant experience. My experience in line rubbed me the wrong way, or they'd have another star. I was already irritated that a mother with three kids had cut in front of me (though the kiddos were in the building, they were obviously not in line), but then an employee was rude to me when she opened another register. She told me the other cashier could help me -- even though the one supposed to "help" me was busy checking with another employee, and I was actually next? The guy who had been behind was paying for his order before I even had a chance to say hi to my cashier. That shouldn't be a total dealbreaker, but then my drink was just okay. I've had their Mocha Cooler before at another location, and I tried a hot mocha today. Neither one of these have been my favorite coffee drinks, and I thought they were a bit overpriced for the size. The top of my drink today had a pretty pattern and it was the perfect temperature, didn't burn my tongue. Maybe their black coffee is better, I do give them the benefit of the doubt. It was a little noisy, which I never mind and is great if you're meeting up with someone to chat. The seating was okay. It was a freezing day, and there were a lot of tables open next to windows; luckily I was able to grab a more central table. I was meeting up with a friend, and it served its purpose; I'd probably go back if I'm meeting up with someone craving Roasterie coffee, but otherwise I'd rather drive a couple minutes south to Waldo and grab One More Cup.

The Roasterie Mid (as opposed to the Westside or 119th locations) is arguably the best of the three spots. This place is always hopping with neighborhood clientele, UMKC and Rockhurst students, aspiring writers, and the random passerby. Like it's cousins, the Roasterie Cafe serves up all the great options you've come to know and love with a lot less pretentiousness than other coffee houses around the area. This would be a six star review if the Roasterie still had their Clover machine, the greatest coffee maker known to the human race. After "The Man" bought out the company, little cafes like the Roasterie discontinued its use. It's a sad day when a great local business like the Roasterie has to bend a knee the Seattle giant, but their coffee trumps that chain any day of the week. Take it black, with cream, or iced, the Roasterie serves up the best cup in town.

Great stop on a visit to KC -- bought a bunch of bags of 40 Sardines back to gift to friends in Florida -- yes -- the building and presentation have evolved over the years and are only better -- wish we had a DC3 flying closer!!!

The Roasterie is the best coffee in town. I always get a small dry cappucino and couldn't be happier. It is like a drug. When I go on vacation it makes me sad that I can't have this coffee to look forward to in the morning. I don't buy the breakfast breads or muffins. I'm tired of being disappointed in breakfast breads from anyplace. They seem day old-ish. I don't really understand 'coffeeshop culture'. I could not bring a laptop and go to town for hours. Too distracting...but the coffee, which is the important part, is fantastic.

The almond croissant and macaron are OK: yelp.com/biz_photos/the-… The espresso is very good: it has a bright, acidic flavor profile.

Not a coffee person so I cannot comment on the coffee itself. I had a vanilla cooler which was quite tasty. My fiancé had an Italian soda which was a bit weak on the syrup but also fairly tasty. So, taste wise, 4 stars. However, I just cannot get behind this place. For one, it's sooooo loud. Due to its layout and seemingly constant business, I can barely hold a conversation here, let alone do work or read. The staff is also not terribly friendly in my experience. They seem inconvenienced just having to take your order. Finally, prices seem really high. Like...reallllly high. I probably won't return here, which is a bummer because I'd like to support it. Oh well, I've tried.

Tasted a macchiato today. The shot was a little bitter, but the milk was like buttah. Sweet creamy deliciousness. We also had the Geisha as a V60 pour over. Waited a long time to drink it (busy working) and was glad to know it retained good flavor.

One of the best cups of coffee I have had in years. I did a pour over with their house roasted Ethiopian. The coffee was complex the way I expect an Ethiopian to be, and it was so smooth. And they don't even use the Chemex system. Big fan of these guys.

I love to come here in between classes at UMKC. They offer a student discount and it's better than going to the plaza and trying to find parking. I'm usually able to find a table and connect to their wifi on my computer. I usually end up spending an hour or two here. On good weather days, the patio is nice and quiet to sit at as well.

I have NEVER EVER EVER had even a GOOD experience here. I have gone multiple times seeing if maybe it was just the baristas working. But I have gone more than 10 times in the last year or so....completely disgusting every time. The baristas do not seem to know what they are doing/can do half the time for drinks. Also, EACH TIME the espresso shot has been HORRENDOUS! That is not exaggerating one bit. It has tasted burnt, bitter, and anything but good. Bleck. I will NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE. I even get grossed out and question people who do like it. I mean....really guys...c'mon. Find good coffee to enjoy. Go to Broadway Cafe or Oddly Correct. Seriously. Know good coffee....and this is not it.

The Café has been voted "Best Coffee Shop" in Kansas City by KC Magazine five times and counting! I agree, they are the bomb. Never had a bad cup of coffee here, from plain drip coffee to lattes and cappuccinos. I really feel like have treated myself when I indulge on a coffee drink here. Well worth every penny, and double punches on Tuesdays!

For serious coffee lovers, the Rwandan is a great dark roast - delicious for pour over or French press. Cafe has super fast free wifi which is very convenient.

Hands down the best coffee in the KC metro area. They have everything from your standard espresso drinks to french press, pour over and siphon of the beans of your choice. The staff is super friendly and they still press their own espresso (instead of the automated machines like Starbucks and Caribou). Local business that only makes buys the top 5% of beans from farmers. I stop by anytime I'm in the area.

I like local coffee. I like that one of the biggest local coffee companies (if not THE biggest) has its own cafe. I'm just not sure I like the Roasterie Cafe all that much. Let's back up a few years, to when they first opened... it was a nice getaway coffee shop in Brookside. Then, it became the local "teen" hangout -- which basically drove away anybody who wanted to just sit there and do any productive work. So, what about now? It's gone back to a nice neighborhood hangout (yay), but in my experience, it feels like it's still too darn crowded from open to close. Since opening, the place has undergone a remodel or two (expanding the inside seating area), but it still feels like it's not enough. Staff-wise -- they're trying too gosh darn hard. They want to differentiate themselves from the Bux baristas, and that's fine and dandy... but there's a sense of "we're better than them because WE pour locally made coffee". There's just something a hair disconcerting about that. I wouldn't turn down an invite to go to the Roasterie for coffee, but I'd have to be in the neighborhood and jonesing for a cup of java for me to stop by on my own.

As a boring, un-hip, 30-something mom, I can't say enough good things about The Roasterie. If you're not familiar with Brookside, it has almost all family-owned & operated businesses, which is attractive to the neighborhood. Brookside is a lively community with all sorts of people: families, business-people, retirees, etc., so you should expect to see these same people patronizing The Roasterie. The large, grassy area outside, the bike rack, and the selection of games are all there so that families and children feel welcome. If you live in the neighborhood or frequent this business often, you will likely see someone you know. The employees, although not all of them might know your name (by no means a job requirement at a coffee establishment), they will at least begin to recognize you and acknowledge you warmly. This has always been my experience, and I've gone there almost daily for about two years. Lots of friends do their daily business at this establishment, and enjoy the vibrant scene and life going on here. If coziness and intimacy is what you want, then The Roasterie might not be the place for you to work, but by no means is this a reflection of their offerings, which I enjoy, often. I guess it wouldn't hurt to say that along with a fun, friendly, lively atmosphere, their coffee is the best in town. About the cafe being too crowded: that's a bad thing? I'd say that's a sign of a great company doing good business. Kudos to them.

Look here, ok? I'm gonna give this place the proper recognition (what the kids call "props"). It's THIS CLOSE to being what I consider "Fine Northwest Coffee". I have to be a snob about this, I'm sorry, but there is no Zeitgeist in these parts, no Stumptown, no Cherry Street. But Roasterie does find itself a place in the running, and that right there makes it one of the (two) best I've had in KCMO. Dig it, you cats: If I can grab a cup and sit down and NOT remark that it doesn't taste in league with PNW coffee, then they're doing something right, In fact I was jacked up so high on caffeine and flavor the day I was in there sippin' that I thought I could be in either the Emerald City or Rose City, easily. I judge all joints by their Americano. If you're gonna give it to me, give it sans the sweet stuff, because I need to feel how that hot fluid works with your water, and and how your cup serves it to my lips. Roasterie Cafe did it right, and I am indeed happy about this; sitting at my table, working on my computer, I was ALMOST back in Pioneer Square, being the fucking snob I am, and enjoying the shit out of my snobberific brew. So, Roasterie, let me ask you this: You're good, and I love what you're pouring. I wanna have this in a dirtier dive, though; Sure you're close to home being in Brookside and all, and I appreciate that, but I suggest grabbing a couple of those cute barristas, an old hand-pullin' machine, a bunch o' beans and ceramic cups and setting up shop in a tiny little wood-lined space somewhere down in Crossroads maybe and gritty it up a bit. That's just me, though, right? I mean, maybe I just need to get rich enough to open a franchise or something... Regardless, I'm diggin'. That day I sat in your shop and enjoyed your spot was even drizzly and gray out...but I don't think it was the weather that made me a fan. You're servin' up a fine cup, by some fine people.

What can one say about a coffee shop in Brookside that is not only over priced, full of bad service, snobby customers and the most double bag looking people hanging out in and around the building? I know the most I can tell you about the several times that I have gone in has been the following: 1. The wrong order 2. Never making my order 3. Hearing some customer talk on his iphone about how the power and light rocked last night. 4. Forgetting my order 5. Repeat on next visit. However sad it is, the employees look cool, but almost to cool for brookside as they are normally to busy texting, standing behind the counter or pretending to be working. This coffee shop is meant to be a place where someone who love "Roasterie" coffee should not only ever go to, but AVOID. I wish this place would close and they would open a starbucks, that would be an upgrade, or better yet check out the drip coffee at Mr. Goodcents, it taste much better.

I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I have been known to drink a vanilla latte now and again. I really like how smooth their latte's are. Since I'm more of an iced tea drinker, I LOVE their mango iced tea. It's definitely refreshing on a hot day. The Roasterie Cafe is locally owned and service is always friendly. The non commercial cafe feel of the plays adds to the small town feel of Brookside.

I think I really took this place for granted when I went here several times a week during the summer and fall of '10. Apparently this place is the place to be. I always figured that, what with the full rooms full of people, all on Macs. Literally. I came in once with a friend and not one PC user in the bunch. I guess that goes along with the attractive staff. I know there was one raven-haired hipster heroine for me, and at least two different women have talked about the dreaminess of one of the (nor former?) male baristas. It's like John Casablancas is hiring manager! I'm not a huge coffee guy. So what the Hell do I know? Well, I know it's a local business, who buys stuff from another local business (Chris Elbow). They have good iced drinks, which is more my speed. And yes, this place can get loud and crowded, especially when people inexplicably bring their kids in. Kids? Coffeehouse? Calamity. Still, I think you can feel good about giving this place your hard-earned money. No, you'll get no cred intermingling with rich Brooksiders, but hey... this place makes some serious coffee (according to everyone else who drinks it) and the staff are all attractive. Whaddya want?

I don't own any apple products to show off, but I like their coffee. It's very noisy. It's not a good place to read a book. If you have milk allergies and want to get a soymilk latte, then don't. I felt very sick after having one of their soymilk lattes. I believe the soymilk and cows' milk goes through the same frother.

In honor of the recent rainy days, I'm sure we're all in need of a good cozy place to warm ourselves with a good mug. The Roasterie is my recommendation for a great place to help transition into winter. Coffee lovers - this is the local Joe, also sold in stores everywhere. But if you're not one for a caffeine boost, no worries, The Roasterie Cafe has plenty of snacks, a case full of sweets to tempt even the most disciplined. Two words: Christopher Elbow (local chocolatier). Much like the neighborhood experience I wrote about in my Bella Napoli review, you'll find the same friendly environment at this Brookside shop. Whether you're in the mood to bury your head in your computer (free wi-fi of course) or make it a gathering, the cafe has plenty of seating and goods to keep you comfortable and warm. A Yelp-worthy place to duck out of the annoying cold rain.

  • Julia F.

The Roasterie Café seems far too trendy to call it a neighborhood coffee house, but for Brookside that is exactly what the Roasterie Café is. Families, students, professionals and others flock to the Roasterie Café with their laptop computers, their strollers and their dogs to enjoy a delicious selection of coffee and drinks from the friendly staff. The atmosphere is warm and upbeat and very clean. The feeling is hip and trendy, yet without the cold yuppie attitude that might otherwise accompany this sort of establishment. In addition to delicious pastries, cakes and fruits, one can purchase boxes of Christopher Elbow or André's chocolates (both excellent local gifts). Finding a table can be a bit of a challenge at this popular coffee shop. During peak times, expect to find a line at the counter and the tables filled with patrons. Many of these customers will be loitering with a laptop and enjoying the WiFi internet. The patio has several tables perfect for enjoying ones beverage (if you have a dog, this allows you to have your well-behaved best friend on leash at your side while you sip). And a small area (adjacent to the restrooms) features armchairs in which patrons can sprawl a bit.

I love coffee shops but the Roasterie is one of my favorites. You see a lot of students drinking coffee and working on their laptops. In warm weather the outside deck is heavenly. It can get a bit crowded but I guess that's the price of success. Parking is easy on the street or the parking lot behind the store. The service is good and the coffee drinks are excellent.

  • Caroline K.

I've been frequenting The Roasterie for quite some time, and I can never get comfortable there. While the coffee and espresso drinks are perfectly fine, the atmosphere and hubabub are unsettling. The main reason you visit a coffee shop is for the coffee, right? They have that down for sure. But if you're like me and you enjoy sitting, relaxing and enjoying your coffee on the spot, this isn't a great contender. It's so loud, so busy and so industrial feeling that you won't feel like using their free wi-fi for too long.

I think I've found my new weekday coffee shop joint! I came based on the yelp reviews and the nifty map thing on yelp. I tried to find Brookside a couple of days ago and failed. My second try was worth it. Anyways, I just had a latte here but I spent a few hours with my computer on one of the comfy chairs. It did get a bit noisy but I suppose I will have to bring my ipod next time. The people who work here were very friendly and this place is huge compared to my other favorite KC coffee shop, the filling station. It was an interesting mix of people too. All ages, doing all sorts of stuff. I liked that they had a lot of food options and I plan on having a quiche or scone the next time I come. I am reserving a star until I sample the food. I might also venture outside if this humidity ever calms down.

Great coffee and great spot for people-watching. The baristas serve up some of the best lattes in town. The Roasterie Cafe even offers chocolate truffles from Christopher Elbow and Annedore's. However, this is the most expensive place for coffee in Kansas City with a medium soy latte ringing in at about $5. If it weren't for the help of Charitable Coupons of $3.50 for a $7 purchase, I wouldn't have been able to try the lattes here so many times. The cafe always seem to be full of activity, making it difficult to find a table at times. Students can often be seen studying here and people on laptops. However, the tables can be small depending on where you sit and you're confined to a tiny space.

Finally made it out to Brookside from the Plaza area (yes, I know it's not that far but dang it 20 degree weather, you make it so hard to want to get out of the house) to visit this little gem of a coffee shop. I had the drip house coffee that was delicious and had me muttering all sorts of obscenities to myself for wasting money at Starbucks on mediocre quality drinks. It's noisy in here, slightly hipsterish and trendy, but I'm from San Francisco-haven of the hipsters-so I felt just at home. Surprisingly fast wi-fi (considering all the people there this afternoon) and plugs all along the wall! Pop in some earphones and it will be easy peezy to get some work done!

This used to be a regular stop of mine when I lived in Brookside, ohhhh, the memories. What I love about this place is that it is locally owned and their process plant is just miles from their coffee shop. A hip, friendly staff that always seems upbeat. Great coffee selections from LCD screens behind the counter along with fine local pastries, cakes and fruit. They even have a Christopher Elbow display for those that don't want to make the trip downtown. They just remodeled this past year, it's a great patio in the summer and offers a relaxed atmosphere inside as well. Pass up Starbucks, buy a higher grade coffee that is LOCAL.

I'm going to make this a dual review of the coffee shop and the coffee beans themselves. Both deserve 4 stars. The café is quaint and roomy, WiFi is available and parking is close, plentiful and easy. For the purposes of this review I'll proclaim my only drink of choice to be coffee, strong and black. In truth though, I lean in close to the cashier and quietly order the Brookside Bob. Essentially mint chocolate chip ice cream and coffee mixed together.** (**this recipe is 100% inaccurate, but the taste is not. It's good, I don't even claim to love mint chocolate chip anything.) As for the company as a whole, it's good to know they care about putting together a premium product and they'll travel the world to make sure they get the best beans available. I always get their whole beans for brewing at home and quickly find out I don't love coffee so much as I love Roasterie coffee.

Brookside is an appealing neighborhood, and the Roasterie is just one of its many virtues. This is the best latte I've had in Kansas City (so far). There is something magical about the way they foam the milk. The texture, temperature, and latte art are perfect every time. Also, they always add just the right amount of sweetness (and I prefer my lattes a little on the sweet side). Their iced lattes are wonderful too! The building looks larger on the inside due to the high ceilings. I've never been there when it wasn't buzzing with activity. There are always an abundance of people who are sitting around reading or working on projects. I've never come here to hang out, only stopped by on a quick coffee run. With it always being so busy, it is hard to find a table if you want to study or write a paper. There is also a care of exquisite cupcakes, baked goods, and Christopher Elbow and other designer chocolates. Another thing to take advantage of is the Roasterie tour. I haven't been, but definitely have plans to tour in the near future!

Great local coffee and tea joint. Love the apple cider too! We usually stop in on weekend mornings for yummy bagels scones and fruit turnovers. Its a great location for those walking the Trolley Trail. The outdoor patio is always full in the summer and love that they're pet friendly.

I tried the coffee here while I was out shopping and I thought it was pretty darn decent. The coffee is bold and strong, the mocha was just sweet enough to keep me from raging. I would have liked it sweeter, but what can you do. The atmosphere was pretty cool, but the baked goods and other treats did not look fresh or appetizing. I would give this place another shot if I was in the area, but I did not see what all the rave was about. Definitely not worth going ten miles out of my way for.

yyyyeeeaaahhhh so this is the best coffee in Misssouri / the midwest. Comfy joint, good crowd, great bathroom, and; SUCH. good coffee. Ask for the Chateua Farms milk and make-up for being a bad parent.

Ok...a friend called me up this morning...OH as I was deciding in my mind what the perfect girl would be for me...ah well...the phone rang and I decided to answer it. Lo and behold I decide to get out of the house, but where to go. I mean I wanted a bite to eat and of course I still needed some coffee to get me going. So here it was (and still is), the Roasterie. Kind of upscale, lots of people I didn't know with their laptops and just my friend and I with some time for discussion. I had a standard regular coffee for which the baristas put some ice in since I don't like my drinks too hot. I marveled at the choice of pastries and settled on that oh so nice quiche. Also...I was enamored with a fine selections of chocolates--expensive, but worth it. I had the Madagascar dark chocolate, macadamia nit, rosemary, and port wine--chocolates--4 in total served on their own plate. Not only was I dazzled with the eye candy, but I also was pleased with the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. Perhaps it was because I mentioned Yelp, or maybe since I was a first-time visitor. In any case, i was given a loyalty program card with not just one, but two punches. Heather, Stephen, and Demi were all smiles and thanked me for the compliments that I gave them. They said that I made their day and invited me to stop by more often. Pricey, but worth it. On a final note, I see some older reviews, and perhaps things have changed since the last reviewers were underwhelmed. For me, for my first time, I was definitely pleased. Warm and cozy without all the excess Starbucks type of traffic. Recommended!

Good coffee? absolutely. I love the local community that the roasterie fosters, every time I stop by for either a quick in and out or to stay and study I see at least three different people I know. It always delightful. Back to the coffee. fantastic quality, great and knowledgeable staff. I know anytime I go to either location I am going to get a great cup of coffee! The local support for the roasterie is wonderful! This is an absolute must try.

The best place in the city -- actually the best place I've seen for being able to sit with your laptop, sip a kawfinated drink, and get work done. Great for blogging or other creative endeavors. There are plenty of outlets to plug into and no one is bothered if you spread your laptop out. The drinks are good too. This place is part of the Roaterie roasters which sell coffee all over the city.

I love this place but hate the parking. It's always very clean and the staff are very nice. Occasionaly you'll run into a long line but it's worth the wait. From coffee to italian sodas I have yet to have a poorly made drink.

Still a fan despite being upcharged the other day .65 for a drop of soy milk in my Americano. Make that a tentative fan. Nickle and diming your customers means that Roasterie is not "as good as it gets." If it was a latte I suppose I could understand as that's more than half milk. It's not just that. The last few times I've been to the Roasterie, I've noticed a slight change in the overall vibe. I can speculate 'til the (soy) cows come home, but this isn't the place for that. Let's just say it's a change in staff and staff demeanor. It seems like no one is terribly uh, *happy* behind the counter. Not that I expect Stepford smiles or anything (see my review of Homer's), but they seem a bit stressed, a bit sad and I don't want the blame to be place on the staff, either (I was a barista in a past life). I know this is going to sound insane, but this negative energy seemed to transfer over into the quality of my drink, too. I couldn't finish it because it was bitter, bordering on sour tasting. Keep in mind that I normally can easily put back 2 20 ounce Americanos here. After paying 5 dollars (that's 4.20 with the upcharge plus .80 tip), this was a disappointment (you know I'm very attached to my coffee routine). Whatever is going on, I hope it returns to the way it used to be.

I am a regular at the Roasterie whenever I'm in town. It has great coffee, a ton of drink creations, pastries and local chocolates. The location itself is quite large, with plenty of space to meet friends, or just sit and read. I love the local feel and have always had a great experience. HIGHLY recommend the Roasterie!

Good coffee without a good atmosphere to match. A year ago, this would have easily been a 5-star rating. But ever since their "expansion" they got rid of the comfy chairs and crammed in a dozen more tables so there's nowhere to sit without literally bumping elbows with the person at the next table. And even with all the extra seating it's difficult to find a place to sit. I used to come here every day for the local coffee and the local coffeehouse atmosphere. I would spend all day there if I could! Now the coffee's still good, but I actually prefer the atmosphere at *Starbucks* above this coffeehouse. No longer the kind of place I used to be able to spend all day sipping coffee and working, and not the place I'd go if I wanted to relax after a hard day. It's sad to see this happen to a once great local coffeehouse, but it looks like I'll have to find somewhere else to spend my money.

Coffee shop with lots of room, porch outside, baked goods (yummy looking cupcakes), different types of coffe, frequent customer cards, etc. What made it good? the space and tables!! the wifi was fast and there were outlets (a strip of them) all around the booth and tables in the back and so it was a great place to spend a sunday working away. The people were quiet and busy doing work and the staff was friendly so props to this coffee shop! Apparently they do take their coffee pretty seriously so if you want to go and be picky about your coffee..this is also a place to just stop by grab a drink and go. I would have sat outside if it wasn't so hot...but the concept was good.

Coffee for coffee snobs. Know this, dear reader: The Roasterie is not your ordinary coffee dive. This isn't merely some cute neighborhood hangout or local hipster haven (though a fixie or two can usually be found chained up outside). This place is a caffeine-peddling evangelizer, spreading their gospel and encouraging all to accept their particular type of air-roasted coffee as their personal lord and savior. These guys are supremely confident in their product, but heck, they're allowed--the stuff is darn good. Boasting the best coffee maker ever produced by humans (the one-cup-at-a-time Cloverâ„¢), a bona fide tasting menu that would make any wine sommelier blush, a relatively diverse collection of patrons, and a sleek ultramodern-cum-40s-Art-Deco-Streamline motif, the place is probably the best (only?) truly sophisticated java joint in the city. A note, however. Roasterie founder Danny O'Neill doesn't really do "dark" the way many of us like it. As a rule, Roasterie specializes in lighter roast coffees, which they do a phenomenal job with. You'll be able to pick out all of the origin notes and subtle flavors that might otherwise be obscured by the darker (French, Espresso, Spanish, etc) roasting processes. Just good to know when you step inside! Enjoy!

After travelling the world, I think this is one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. Besides great coffee, The Roasterie in Brookside is a great addition to the neighborhood and one that adds a lot of value...much more than a Starbucks would if it were in the same place. They don't advertise this much but I have been to cupping events and other meetings at the Roasterie. Be sure to ask if you are interested. * Menu o Great coffee. My favorite is Blue Tawar o Pastries are locally made, but they are not my favorite. They are often too sweet for my taste. I would like to see items like locally made oat bars. I also wish they would carry some nice granola and energy bars. o Other great items too such as Jones Soda and Christopher Elbow chocolates * Wine List o N/A * Cleanliness o Always clean and enjoyable. You would let your kid eat off the table here (and I have). Bathrooms are very clean too * Décor o Perfect for the neighborhood. Local art makes The Roasterie even more exciting to go to * Atmosphere o Great to have a busy coffee shop in the neighborhood. You see families, business meetings, civic meetings, student studying, and people on dates. Free Wi-Fi too. * Kitchen Staff o The people that work at the Roasterie are fabulous. They call you by name and often have your order ready for you when you get to the front of the line. * Host o N/A * Location o Brookside * Parking o Free street and parking lot parking. You can also walk/bike to it from the Trolley trail. They have some great bike racks shaped like coffee cups * Restrooms o Always clean * Cuisine o Coffee Shop * Presentation o Paper cups AND porcelain * Creativity o Great art, great patio, great seating, great logo...it's all just great. Overall...4.5 out of 5

Finally, a cup of coffee that I can't make at home. YES. This cruel Kansas City Winter, The Roasterie's resilient Clover withstood incredibly trying conditions, persisted, and now continues to deliver a cup o' joe that will open your eyes wider than usual. The water tastes fresh and clean, and you get to experience all of the little nuances of aroma and flavor that the Clover brings from the bean straight to your travel mug. A sincere thank you goes out to The Roasterie for keeping a Clover in Kansas City, Missouri. Little does the general public know, but this small machine actually doubled (in a previous life) as an anchor for city planners and politicians to use to build a better infrastructure in cities like New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and Austin. Is it a coincidence that all of these great cities also possess Clovers?

The heart design in my latte' put a smile on my face and the taste of the latte' made me even happier. The baristas were very friendly and fast making my coffee. They also serve bagels, awesome looking cupcakes, and other little bites to have with your coffee. I liked the location and it was filled with vibrant people on the Saturday morning I went there. It's a cool little place to sit down and prop up your laptop. Try this good place that serves up our very own local coffee!

I don't generally hang out at the Roasterie because it's not as cozy or slightly-used looking of a coffee shop as I usually like, BUT the coffee can't be beat. This is my regular spot to blow my money on an expensive latte or espresso as I head out the door. Also, I buy my weekly coffee beans here more often than not for coffee at home... It's a bit expensive, but no regrets. Coffee snobs of the world agree that you can't really put a price on happiness. And that's just what the Roasterie puts piping hot in your cup. Bravo!

I had thought I reviewed this place before, but I guess not. This is one of those places that I find myself on a quiet Saturday afternoon or "sick" day (aka a mental health day). It is sort out of the way in the cozy neighborhood of Brookside, and not easy to get to from main highways, but I love it nonetheless. They take their coffee very seriously, and I am forever grateful. Not matter what I have ordered it tastes wonderful. They are barista-masters I believe. They have tons of seating and even have long strips of plug-ins all around, welcoming those who are studious or those always choosing to go somewhere else to sit at their computer doing nothing but reading blogs and checking their facebook or twitter pages. (I won't say loitering because it is such a negative term.) They also have welcoming but eclectic atmosphere welcoming the young and old, the group and the lonely brooding artist who sits in the corner by themselves. Their outdoor seating is quite ideal with lots of shade and plenty of chairs. AND....I can't forget their amazingly decorated bathrooms! So much you can tell about a place from their bathrooms. Definitely check it out!

I have to give this coffee shop 5/5 stars because it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. Certainly, it is lacking in a few categories - it doesn't have a bunch of comfy couches, it doesn't have that grungy feel that seems to be all the rage these days, and it's got a limited food menu at best. That being said, I don't think that The Roasterie is trying to be any of those things. Instead, this fantastic coffeeshop aims to be a friendly, clean, artistic, and modern-feeling joint that offers fantastic coffee and snacks for people who love coffee, and it hits the nail on the head in this respect. The coffee here is great, and you get a sense of class and polish from The Roasterie that is perhaps not a strong point of many other cafes. It has a great location, really friendly baristas, a diverse offering of drinks, and plenty of space for those looking to sit down and work or have a chat. Come check it out, you won't be disappointed!

I lovingly refer to this place as my "second office." I can work for hours here. Coffees, teas, lattes/espresso drinks... it's all good. (For reference, I normally get soy lattes or the coffee-of-the-day; have not ventured into the Clover or other brewing techniques.) Love the latte art. I for one really like their new remodeling with ample power outlets and the room with lots of windows (most of the sunshine of working outside without the glare.) I've never had an issue with noise... then again, I need a little noise when I'm working. If I had to take off for something it would be the following: 1. Food selection. I am not a sweet tooth and their offerings are overwhelmingly sweet. There are bagels and croissants, but they're a LOT of simple carbs. What I'd really love are some sandwiches. (I know for a bit they brought some in from Brookside market, so maybe they didn't sell well?) I realize that this is personal preference. 2. I don't know what it is, but this place makes my clothes smell like coffee like no other coffee shop does.

I'll be completely honest, I've yet to have a single espresso based drink at this delish joint. That's cuz the drip and clover press coffee are seriously incredible. Their clover press coffee is the only coffee I can drink black (I'm a wuss). It's simply divine! Rich, smooth, smoky, frickin' good. You must try it, it's worth the wait and every single penny. My favorite place for coffee in the city, and maybe one day I'll delve into their espresso...maybe...

I work here and I may be bias but this is hands down the best cafe around, at least Kansas City Metro Area. We roast our own coffee and take pride into everything that we do at the cafe. We also won best of Kansas City 2 years in a row and we have only been open for 2 years. You will get beautiful latte art on your latte. We also carry Naked Juice, Jones Soda and have sandwiches for lunch time. We also have a Clover Machine... a revolutionary coffee machine that only brews one cup at a time. Starbucks got wind of many great cafe's using the Clover and that gave us a huge edge on them that they decided to buy out the Clover Company... what a-holes! So come to the cafe and check it out while you can... also visit cloverequipment.com

I'm new to this area in KC and have always heard people talking about this place. Geez, came here on a Wed. morning around 10:30 and the place was crazy busy. I can see why. The coffee is excellent, and the cool hang out and chill vibe here.

Absolutely love the Roastarie. The coffee is always excellent, their selection of baked goods and cupcakes from Gigi's is fantastic. I also love the option of picking up a Christopher Elbow chocolate. I spend hours on their free and speedy Wi-Fi. The music played is always fresh and interesting, hardly ever grating. The staff is friendly and helpful. This is a great place to have a business meeting or just work on business. It is a little busy and bustling at times, but I think that adds to the atmosphere.

I was expecting the environment in here to be a lot better than it was. Being in the brookside area the neighborhood area is great. When you walk in though the inside is not layed out all that well and you don't feel all that connected when in it with everyone else (at least I didn't). The coffee and the cookie I got were average, and not what I expected. There were no blinds to pull on the windows and the chairs are not setup in a way to talk easily with a friend (unless you sit at a table). I drove with a friend from the plaza here to give it a try over the star bucks on the plaza, but the environment here was such that I won't come back.

Best coffee shop in KC. As close as you are going to get, to the type of cappuccino's and latte's you will get in Italy. They also make mocha's with Shatto chocolate milk! My fav drink: 6 oz cappucino Great coffee shop!

  • Emily S.

We've been here several times with different experiences every time. Sometimes the baristas act like we are an inconvenience, but last night everyone was smiling and our cappuccino was delicious! Although it was more of a latte, the espresso was well extracted and not bitter. The crowd in the store was lively and if we lived closer I know I would spend time in this cool space.I know that if we were trying to show off Kansas City's coffee scene to a visitor we would certainly take them here first. We will be back!

Their coffee tastes great IMO, and the cafe is a really nice place to hang out and read. The employees have always been very friendly, in my experience. I dock them a star only because it is a bit overpriced. I enjoy the place a lot though and hang out there regularly.

  • Kackie C.

The place is always humming with activity, all ages, all types. The coffee is good, the internet is here (which is more than I can say for a lot of coffee shops in KC), and the staff, almost without fail, is really friendly. I can't help myself, too, when I walk up to the counter and see the Christopher Elbow jewelry case in front of me. It's impossible to resist. They've got a good thing going here. I don't love the crowd all the time, and the coffee is sometimes great sometimes eh. I wish they had a little more actual sustenance than baked goods (for a place that stays open so late). That's all. Other than that, it's a pretty darn good coffee shop.

  • Erin J.

I love it here. This place has the big-city coffee shop vibe that I've been missing from my time in L.A., except minus the smog, traffic and I'm-going-to-be-famous-I-swear attitude that I haven't been missing from my time in L.A. The coffee is delicious, the space has several tables and various nooks for studying, and the people watching is fab. I did discover that this isn't a good place to study, at least for me - but that's just due to the aforementioned great people watching combined with my limited attention span (comparable to that of a fruit fly) and has nothing to do with the Roasterie itself.

The Whose Who of Coffee. Come for the looks, the caffeine and the love. I love pouring a good cup of joe right here at the Roasterie. I'm a frequent customer here, and everyday I'm always recognized-- not just with a smile, but as a genuine person. I love their coffee here, and this is a favorite place for me to have meetings. I've also met some interesting people here its all about the quality. YUM!

I love this cafe. You definitely get the local cafe feel when you walk in. You'll always find a good spot to connect your laptop to their free Wi-Fi and chilax. White chocolate mocha and lemon square is a must. They also have several board games if you just want to hang out with your buddies.

Wonderful community atmosphere, magnificent coffee and free wi-fi. What else do you need? The Roasterie has been my "branch office" ever since I opened my company. Only drawback is that it's such a hopping place it can get a little loud, so best conduct business outside or over the 'net. But for the enjoyment of coffee and friends, it's becoming a Brookside institution.

    (4)
  • Kirun M.

The coffee here is awesome, but the people behind the counter could use a general attitude adjustment. They aren't very friendly or helpful for that matter. I'm a pretty frequent customer and appreciate friendly service when I show up in the morning looking for a latte to get me going. I do like the fact that they have a punch card- and they are now doing a double punch on Tuesdays.

  • Mashka I.

excellent: outlets at each wall table, patio spots, a few tables placed near windows, wifi, pastries + chocolates - Christopher Elbow the best in town good: coffee - not the best, atmosphere - it's a large space, and can be really quiet Overall, a great place to study for a few hours, but the ambience sometimes feels like a generic Starbucks. I'd go 3.5 *

    (3)
  • Rachel M.

Coffee is good but customer service is awful. The baristas may make a great latte but their rude attitude while trying to appear hip, makes for a so-so experience. Environment is noisy and not relaxing.

Coffee was pretty good. Great Neighborhood that its in. The staff was really nice and very friendly. If I come back to Kansas City, i will go back. They also had a pretty decent pour over drip coffee. Its priced moderately, my medium coffee was almost $4. The reason i gave it four stars because i compared the ambiance to oddly correct and its just not as cool. If i hadnt seen Oddly correct, I would of probably given it 5 stars.

I've been drinking Roasterie coffee at the Classic Cup, at Eden Alley, in my home brewed as too strong French press, pretty much everywhere, since I moved here. But I hadn't made it to the cafe, and I must admit, I've been missing out. I sort of shy away from Brookside a lot, as I fear I'm not nearly ladylike and put together enough. But this is a totally solid place to spend an afternoon with a romance novel and a large iced coffee. Because I am pretty lame, I have in fact done this, and spent two hours in half-sun on their porch, devouring some trash lit and being pretty satisfied with life. And the coffee was good, which was unsurprising. I feel like I should add on to this when I've snacked there, but the assortment was larger than most in coffee shops, and it looked pretty obscenely delicious. Perhaps the best part was that I was attempting to buy coffee beans for my sister, and though they don't have all the Roasterie varieties and thus I was denied my Mojo request, the barista was super helpful about finding a couple of options that would serve as a decent substitute. He was even pretty pleased to be able to do it, and lacked that annoying barista ennui that one often finds. So that's big points. I was also impressed that though it was a lovely Saturday in the middle of a three-day weekend, there were still plenty of seats both inside and out. And there was no pressure to move along once my coffee was finished, and that's something I really, really appreciate. So no, it's not as cozy or comfortable in appearance as my favorite coffee places in the world. But it is welcoming in its openness, and there's something to be said for that. Plus, they just have mighty fine coffee.

Best coffee in town! Their chai tea lattes are really good too! Great location in the heart of Brookside and my husband and I love to come here on Saturday mornings on the way to the Brookside Farmers Market. It's pet friendly so you can sit outside on the patio with your dog where they provide a water dish and enjoy the day. They recently installed bike racks that look like coffee cups when the renovated and now offer curb side pickup! Next time you want coffee, skip Starbucks and go here!

The Roasterie is a locally owned and produced Coffee company here in Kansas City. The Brookside coffee shop is a great place to get a cup of coffee, a pastry or just sit around and do whatever you want. Last time I went I got a cup of regular coffee and a pumpkin muffin; I proceeded to sit in a comfy booth and surf the internet for two hours while I got some work done, paid some bills, and people-watched. This a great local spot for a cup of joe, especially if you want to support homegrown business over the corporate giants like Starbucks.

I'm so impressed by this place the coffee is ab-fab. Elise (lead barista) is amazing. I love the Christopher Elbow coffee & recently I bought some coffee from Panama that just knocked me over.

The Roasterie is my favorite coffee shop to frequent! They have the best mocha I have ever tasted, they use Shatto chocolate milk in it. I love that they are local and support other local businesses ie: Christopher Elbow chocolate and Shatto milk products. Try them, you'll fall in love with the super friendly and personable staff and your awesome coffee!!!

The Roasterie Café, in the lovely Brookside neighborhood, might be the best locally-owned coffee shop in the city. Or the state. Or, possibly, the world. If the weather's nice you can sit outside, watching rich ladies and college kids from UMKC down the street stroll by. Inside is simply some of the finest coffee served anywhere; packed at the Roasterie plant just a mile down the street, roasted and ground right on site. But the best part about the place is the employees, who are hired for loving coffee and trained to know it. You'll find no surly sourpusses who'd rather be anywhere but behind the counter here. Roasterie peeps love coffee, live coffee, are trained to know coffee and are more than happy to discuss their passion with you. Or if you prefer, chat with friends, bang away for hours on the computer, play one of the board games there for customers to use, or just stare into space and feel the buzz.

Comfy and tasty. The mocha was delicious and made with Shatto milk. I recommend the quiche, flaky and dense in all the right places. The patio is perfect on a sunny fall afternoon. The staff was friendly and very helpful.

Support Locally Owned Businesses! The baristas here brew a perfect expresso drink...it's worth it to stay and enjoy your coffee drink in the REAL cup and saucer (not paper cup) because you'll enjoy the creamy foam with every single sip! And the baristas put a fine piece of foam art on each drink. Go ahead and start a conversation with the employees or the person next to you...friendly, knowledgeable, great service, everything a local business should be. Thanks Danny O'Neill (owner) for giving us the Roasterie Cafe.

I love this place. Great coffee, super cool people that always seem happy to see me no matter how long it's been since I bathed. Great space, nice environment. Thanks for enabling my caffeine fueled addiction!

Let me start by saying this was not my first choice of a coffee shop in the 'Hood of Brookside but as time progressed it has become my office away from my office and a home away from home (The twins even call it the black coffee shop in response to its black and white decor and they know what the menu offers long before we enter). This renovated gas station (which is why it looks and is displayed the way it is) has become somewhat of a neighborhood staple over the past 5+ years with a growing crowd of locals, a plethora of area travelers (aka JoCo folks roaming through on their way out to the plaza, KCP&L, etc.), college students, business professionals, industry folks, etc. It IS a happening place and it IS almost always busy (Note: I am in sometime between 730a and 1000a every day, seven days a week) but that is what every business owner wants. I didn't always like coffee, espresso, etc. but I have learned to over time and The Roasterie has helped this occur. Their drip coffee is very good and the options can be some of the best in the city. They do take their craft very seriously and it shows. The espresso drinks, etc. are top notch and are consistent no matter which barista makes my order. Whether you like it black, extra hot, extra shots, The Clover, The Clever, the French Press, the Pour Over doesn't matter - They are coffee geeks and love what they do! (The best part is that with my frequent visits I am known and my drinks are usually prepared and ready before I even pay for them - Membership has its privileges!) Food options have progressed over time as well and range from cookies, brownies, croissants, yogurt, tortilla roll ups, fruit, bagels to gourmet cup cakes, Andre's and Christopher Elbow chocolates as well. The gift item selection has grown too ... all kinds of coffee products, whole beans from around the globe, sauces, rubs, clothing and more. Free wi-fi, a great patio, water bowls for your dog and steel sculptures to boot ... it is what it is and you either like or not! Fortunately, we love it and so do so many others! Come for the coffee but stay for the people watching and board games!

The first thing I noticed about this lovely cafe was the COOLEST bike racks ever-- shaped like coffee cups! Big points for a creative way to encourage bikes in car-dominated Kansas City. Outside they also have sweet windmill art and a quaint building design and about plenty of outdoor seating with separate smoking and non-smoking tables placed far apart away to keep everyone happy. When the weather is nice, this place would be ideal for some serious cafe lounging in the afternoon sun. The inside is spacious with plenty of tables, so it is an excellent place to settle down for a few hours and crank out some work with the free wifi. My barista was very sweet and perfectly patient with my indecision at the counter. She even offered to add sugar pre-foam to my latte, suggesting that pre-dissolving the sugar is better. Perhaps she didn't want me to have to disturb the lovely leaf foam art she created. And the latte was delicious. No complaints. The reason I deducted one star because I prefer my cafes a bit cozier. This leans towards the industrial-ish style. The echos of conversation dominate the low-volume music, so bring your own if you are into that sort of thing. One more thing.... they have some killer looking chocolates on display.... Tempting, very tempting.

Good ambient music, good lighting, good vibe, easy to sit for hours with a computer, easy to sit for hours with a real friend. Coffee is good, treats are tasty. I've been looking for a cafe like this in KC for ten years.

Good coffee and pastries, lots of comfy seating and board games if you didn't bring any work to do. It's an appropriately quiet cafe with outdoor seating on nice days. Oh, and there's free wi-fi too! I'm definitely a fan of this place. Enjoy!

I created a yelp account just to write a review about the roasterie in brookside. It is the worst service I have ever experienced. Since I live in brookside, I used to go there every morning to get coffee. The only reason I went their was because there wasn't anywhere else close to get coffee in Brookside. Thank God there is a Panera opening up across the street. I hope they take all their business. Not only is the staff rude, but the owner is just as nasty. I have been their a total of around 50 plus times. They got my order right ONCE. ONCE!!!! They never remembered who I was, my name, or even what I ordered on a regular basis. As if this isn't bad enough, they WAY over charge for extras. The last time I went in there, they charged me $6.50 for a small late because of the extra syrup I asked for. Let me say that again, $6.50 for a small late. I would be lucky if they even gave me a drink. They have forgotten it all together multiple times. It also takes the Roasterie longer then any other coffee establishment to actually get your drink. I have nothing good to say about this place and if it stops just one person from going there, then it was worth writing this review. Go to Starbucks or Panera if you want coffee and good service.

my wish is that this place could be my one-and-nearly-only coffee shop - after all, it is walking-distance-close. but my many-dozens-per-year frequency has dwindled to only a hand full. the seating areas are decent and the addition of the open-sided wall and outdoor patio helped...although unfortunately there's no stand-up bar available. no complaints with the coffee drinks - other than above-worth prices - but the too often frowny faces of the baristas brings me down when i'm looking for a pick-me-up and the atmosphere is so loud it takes away from the relaxing atmosphere hoped for on occasion with a coffee shop... ...and since when did coffee shops become day cares?!!...i can't imagine a coffee shop is the choice of kids and with the frequency and distraction they have become at this coffee shop - this is one customer who will move on to coffee venues more reserved for adults.

Great relaxing place to study. Has wifi. Plenty of outlets. Friendly staff. Only 1 bathroom for female and male (total 2). Clean. Lots of food selection. Americano is decent. The best thing about this place is the space.

The cafe itself is nice and I have absolutely no complaints about the place. Why only 4 stars then? The truth is, I'm just not a big fan of the way their coffee tastes! It's decent and quite drinkable to be sure, but there are several other local coffee roasters that I feel put out a superior product.

We're blessed to have a top-class coffee roaster and world-class company like the Roasterie here in Kansas City. Going beyond fair trade, owner Danny O'Neill has negotiated direct contracts for 70% of the coffee that the Roasterie buys. That means that the Roasterie commits to buy an entire crop from farmers with no middleman. Not content to pay a great, guaranteed price for a crop, Danny's paid for day-care centers so that both parents can be out in the fields, picking coffee and over time, building up wealth in a family so that both parents don't have to work and so children can have greater economic opportunities. The Roasterie air roasts all their beans and engages in multiple cupping and tasting procedures all the way through the delivery chain (that will make sense for coffee snobs - for coffee amateurs like me, trust me, that's cool). Finally, in addition to delicious Christopher Elbow chocolates and pastries, and great coffee, the Roasterie Cafe also features a Clover machine. Clover is a patented technology that extracts maximum flavor and strength from coffee beans. This technology was so good that Starbucks bought it, and put a rising competitor out of business. Just because they bought the company doesn't mean you can't enjoy the strength of the brew. Check out a Clover-version of your coffee. And then prepare to not sleep for a while :-) Note: very warm, inviting interior with board games and a mixed group of students, retirees, professionals, and families. It will be crowded at peak times so if you want to come to study, come early.
